Breastfeeding and Weight Loss: What You Need to Know

Wondering how breastfeeding affects weight loss? Learn why some moms lose weight easily while others don’t, and how to stay strong and nourished while nursing.

My goal isn't to promote weight loss. I don't focus on weight loss. My mission is to make moms strong, because your body is amazing and smart! It's all about fueling and supporting your body the way it deserves. I get this question all the time, so I did my research, and here's what I've learned:

Can Breastfeeding Make It Hard to Lose Weight?

Many people say breastfeeding helps moms lose weight after having a baby, but it's not always that simple. If you're wondering, "Why am I not losing weight even though I'm breastfeeding?" you’re not alone! Let’s explore what’s true, what’s not, and what you can do if weight loss feels slow while breastfeeding.

How Breastfeeding Affects Weight Loss

Breastfeeding burns extra calories  about 300 to 500 per day, sometimes more. For some moms, this helps them with  the baby weight. Studies suggest that moms who breastfeed may return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster (PubMed), but every mom’s body is different. Factors like hormones, metabolism, and food intake all play a role too.

Some moms lose weight easily while breastfeeding, while others find it harder due to increased appetite, body changes, and how the body holds onto fat to help produce milk.

Why Some Moms Keep Weight While Breastfeeding

  • Hormones Hold Fat: The body produces prolactin to make milk, but prolactin also helps store fat, which can slow down weight loss.
  • More Hunger & Cravings: Breastfeeding can make moms hungrier, which can lead to eating more calories than expected.
  • Metabolism Changes: The body may slow its calorie-burning processes to protect milk supply and ensure baby gets enough nutrition.
  • Stress & Lack of Sleep: Taking care of a baby can be tough! High stress levels and not enough sleep can also cause the body to hold onto weight.
  • Not Enough Strength Exercise: Cardio alone isn’t always enough. Strength training helps burn fat and keep muscles strong.

How to Stay Strong While Breastfeeding

  • Eat Healthy Foods: Choose lean proteins, healthy fats, and fiber-rich foods to keep you full and energized.
  • Drink Plenty of Water: Thirst can sometimes feel like hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking.
  • Exercise with Strength Training: Lifting weights or doing bodyweight exercises helps burn fat and keeps your muscles strong. remove the burn fat
  • Get Rest When You Can: Even small breaks to rest and recharge can help your body stay balanced.
  • Be Patient With Your Body: Some moms might lose weight after they stop breastfeeding, and that's totally okay. Remember, your body is doing incredible work: it's making food for your baby!

Final Thoughts: Should You Worry About Breastfeeding and Weight Loss?

Nope! Every mom’s body is unique. Some lose weight quickly, while others hold onto it until they stop breastfeeding. Instead of stressing about weight, focus on nourishing your body, staying active, and being kind to yourself. You’re doing an amazing job, mama! 💕
